From Hardware Store to Hard Time: The "Ambyar" Collapse of Tulungagung’s First Citizen

JAKARTA, MCE – It seems the "Friday Curse" remains the most potent force in Indonesian politics, far outlasting any campaign magic. Gatut Sunu Wibowo, the newly minted Regent of Tulungagung, has officially traded his executive suit for a splash of orange. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) intercepted his Friday night (10/4) plans with a sting operation (OTT) that was anything but festive.

Gatut, who just began his 2025-2030 term after a nail-biting win in the 2024 local elections, is now relocating to Jakarta. However, this isn't a victory lap; it’s a one-way trip to the "Red and White" building for an intensive interrogation.

A "Tour Group" to the KPK

KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo confirmed that Gatut wasn't traveling light. Out of 18 people detained during the midnight raid, 13 were shipped to Jakarta in shifts. It looked less like a legal procedure and more like a grim administrative field trip.

"In addition to securing the parties involved, the team also seized evidence in the form of cold, hard cash," Budi stated on Saturday, his tone suggesting that seeing piles of illicit money has become a tiresome routine.

The entourage included 12 officials from the Tulungagung Regency government. While loyalty to one's boss is usually a virtue, following him all the way to a KPK cell is a level of commitment most would probably skip.

The Builder Who Forgot His Foundation

Gatut’s background is colorful, to say the least. Before becoming Tulungagung’s "Number One," he was a successful hardware store mogul. Unfortunately, while he clearly knows how to sell cement and bricks, he seems to have forgotten how to build a solid foundation for his own integrity.

His political maneuvers were equally "flexible." Formerly a cadre of the PDIP, he jumped ship to the Gerindra Party just before the election. But as it turns out, no matter which party flag you wave, the KPK’s handcuffs come in only one size.

East Java: The Corruption "Hat-Trick"

Gatut’s arrest adds another shameful chapter to East Java’s growing list of legal casualties. He follows in the footsteps of the Regent of Ponorogo and the Mayor of Madiun, both of whom were snagged by the KPK earlier this year.

At this rate, East Java is scoring a "corruption hat-trick" that no citizen asked for. For other regional leaders still tempted to play with the public’s purse: consider this a reminder that the KPK doesn't need an appointment to pick you up on a Friday night.

The people of Tulungagung, who handed him a 50.72% victory just months ago, are now left with nothing but "buyer’s remorse." It appears those grand campaign promises have evaporated faster than the ink on a search warrant. (bp).
